Tim Ebner: New Paintings

March 29 - May 10, 2025

Reception: Saturday, March 29, 3-5 PM

Location: CMAY Gallery, Los Angeles, CA

CMAY Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition featuring the latest paintings by Tim Ebner. Curated by the legendary gallerist Rosamund Felsen—an influential figure in the Los Angeles art world—this exhibition continues her enduring commitment to showcasing boundary-pushing contemporary artists.

Felsen, often described as more than just a gallerist, prefers the title of "presenter." Her focus has always been on fostering artistic expression rather than simply engaging in the commercial aspects of the art market. She has long championed artists who push the limits. She was among the first to showcase such artists as Chris Burden, Mike Kelley, Paul McCarthy, Richard Jackson, Jason Rhoades, and Lari Pittman, among others. Her keen eye and unparalleled commitment to artists have solidified her legacy in the art world.

When CMAY Gallery director Carl Berg approached Rosamund about curating a show at CMAY Gallery, she immediately said, "I want to do an exhibition with Tim Ebner." Rosamund has a long history of working with Tim, including 15 solo exhibitions over a period of more than 30 years. She has supported his career throughout his various stylistic changes, for which he is well known.

Ebner's work has evolved from Minimalist to Figurative, and his latest paintings are expressive abstractions. Rosamund has stood by him even during times when exhibitions did not sell as well due to his shifting styles. An artist's career is never a linear progression, and Rosamund understood this, providing unwavering support through the highs and lows of artistic practice.

The exhibition New Paintings signifies an accumulation of over 40 years of art-making, from  Ebner's early days as a student at CalArts to his recent retirement from teaching. The show consists of a variety of expressive abstract paintings that demonstrate both rigorous technique and spontaneity. For these new works, Tim has devised and used a range of tools, from mittens to handmade brushes, as well as a custom-built painting contraption made of metal to create dynamic forms in his artwork.

Tim's new works are exuberant and joyful. He finds immense pleasure in the act of painting, continuing his tradition of experimentation to create a fresh style while maintaining the unmistakable essence of Tim Ebner.
