Val Kilmer
Some Notes on Nature
October 1 - November 5, 2022
Opening Reception: October 1, 3-6pm
PRJCTLA is pleased to present Val Kilmer in his first solo exhibition at the gallery.
Val Kilmer, an accomplished poet and visual artist, explores the infinite and infinitesimal nature of organic forms and transitional elements, almost fractal, inviting the viewer to dive with him into works that unfold the familiar and open windows into foreign worlds. Painted on steel plates, the portrait-orientation of the pieces and the depth of layers create interminable shoreline edges that reference the notion of zooming into the frame. Kilmer himself has noted the “Black-Hole” nature of these pieces.
The prints are generated from high-resolution scans of the painted metal panels. Often when the fractal world is blown-up it reveals yet another window. Scaled up, these images both reference their source material and become entirely new works.
Like looking through a microscope, these works bring organic matter to life, as if nature itself had had a hand in the process. These impulsive, fluid images suggest that there are things greater than ourselves, they hint to Kilmer’s own belief in spring and rebirth, the poetic and pantheistic.
